ชื่อ Jellyfish แต่ไม่ใช่ ‘fish’

             แม้มีคำว่าปลาอยู่ในชื่อภาษาอังกฤษ แต่แมงกะพรุนไม่ได้มีลักษณะใดที่ใกล้เคียงกับปลาเลย แมงกะพรุนเป็นสัตว์ไม่มีกระดูกสันหลัง มีลักษณะลำตัวโปร่งใส นิ่ม ที่สำคัญคือพวกมันไม่มีกระดูก เหงือก สมอง ปอด หัวใจ หรือแม้แต่เลือด ร่างกายแมงกะพรุนประกอบด้วยวุ้นเป็นส่วนใหญ่ และมีน้ำเป็นองค์ประกอบมากถึง 95% ซึ่งด้วยความใสและบางของผิวหนังจึงทำให้แมงกะพรุนสามารถแลกเปลี่ยนออกซิเจนผ่านเนื้อเยื่อโดยตรง

               Even though the word fish is in the English name But jellyfish don’t have any characteristics similar to fish. The fish is classified as a group of vertebrates. But jellyfish are invertebrates. Their bodies are transparent and soft. The important thing is that they do not have bones, gills, brains, lungs, hearts, or even blood. The jellyfish’s body is made up mostly of jelly. and contains up to 95% water. The clear and thin skin allows the jellyfish to exchange oxygen directly through the tissues.
